Construction Announcement

Posted on April 23rd, 2018 in News

Due to construction this season, RVs over 22 feet are not permitted. Visitors whose vehicles do not fit the requirements still have the option to camp outside of the park and take Sequoia Shuttle into the park. A great place to park and shuttle is the Three Rivers Historical Museum stop.

Camping with RVs or Trailers

Check vehicle-length limits on park roads before deciding which road to take into the park. Because of road construction, vehicles over 22 feet are prohibited between Hospital Rock and Giant Forest. If you have a longer vehicle and plan to drive to sequoia groves, use the northern park entrance into Kings Canyon National Park via Highway 180. If you use the southern entrance via Highway 198, you won’t be able to drive a longer RV or trailer to the Giant Forest.

Generals Highway

The 16-mile section of the Generals Highway leading from the Sequoia park entrance at Hwy 198 to the Giant Forest sequoia grove was built in the early 1920s and cannot accommodate longer vehicles. If your vehicle is longer than the following advisories, we recommend that you use Hwy 180 to access these parks.

  • Vehicles longer than 22 feet(6.7 m) are currently not allowed between Potwisha Campground and the Giant Forest Museum in Sequoia National Park because of a road construction project. Increased construction activity will require that vehicles over 22 feet long use Hwy 180, the northern entrance to these parks and the preferred route for these longer vehicles.
  • Vehicles longer than 24 feet(7.3 m) are not advisedbetween the Foothills Visitor Center and Potwisha Campground in Sequoia National Park.

For more information on vehicle requirements and updates on ongoing construction visit the National Park Service (NPS) website.
